Your NHS CV: What Actually Matters (and What Doesn't)

Here is the truth most CV guides skip: NHS shortlisting is scored on your supporting statement against the person specification, not on CV design. But your CV still matters — it feeds the application form, evidences your registration and dates, and follows you to interview. Here is what it actually needs to do.

What the NHS actually reads

Most NHS applications go through NHS Jobs or Trac, where you complete a structured form: employment history, qualifications, registration, and the supporting statement. Panels score the statement. Your CV's real jobs are to populate that form accurately, keep your dates straight, and support interview questions — not to win on looks.

What to include

  • Professional registration first: body (NMC, GMC, HCPC…), PIN/number, status and expiry.
  • Employment history, newest first, with month + year for every role — NHS forms want exact dates and unexplained gaps get asked about.
  • One line per role on scope: setting, patient group, team size, key responsibilities.
  • Qualifications with institution and year; mandatory training worth listing (BLS/ILS, safeguarding level, manual handling).
  • Visa/right-to-work status in one factual line if you need sponsorship — it saves everyone time.

What to cut

  • Photos, graphics, skill bars and multi-column layouts — forms and ATS systems mangle them.
  • A long 'personal profile' paragraph of adjectives. Two factual lines beat ten flattering ones.
  • Duties copied from job descriptions. Swap them for what you actually did and one outcome where you can.
  • Anything you cannot back up at interview — every line is a potential question.

A structure that works

Simple, in this order

Name and contact → Registration → Professional summary (2 lines, factual) → Employment history (newest first, dated, one line of scope each) → Qualifications and training → Right-to-work status. Two pages, plain formatting, PDF.
